Year 2 - Sound production (Intro Task) Teacher - David
Avengers Infinity War: In the scene where Thanos is fighting a group of the Avengers, The mood and meaning of the film from a few minutes before changed drastically. Especially when Doctor Strange Say's in the scene "don't let him close his fist". As he Say's that quote, the music changes into a more mysterious style , this could mean that anything could happen within this duration of the scene, it also makes the scene a lot more tense. Also, the music then changes to an orchestra, which they use trumpets, french horns and trombones to signify intensity and excitement.
However, as the scene goes on, Iron man flies towards Thanos and shoots his rockets at him, as this happens the orchestra raises in volume and then quietens, the reason for this is to gather suspense from the audience. Finalizing whether Thanos was injured after the explosion. But actually, Thanos doesn't get harmed at all, he retaliates back, by absorbing all of the fire from the explosion and shoots it back at Iron Man. As he does this, the music changes from a major tone to a minor tone, the music changes as though a villain has entered the room. This is done because, Iron Man gets flung far away from the avengers and Thanos. And because, Thanos retaliates in such a astonishing way.
On the other hand, once Thanos attacked Iron Man, a few minutes later something quite humorous happened, what happened was a ship crashes into Thanos and as it hits him, the sound is like a funny thump sound, this is to definitely make the audience laugh. Music then stops completely and the camera shot is tracking the ship that slides Thanos into a wall, so its like an awkward, funny scene because Thanos wasn't expected it.
Going back in the scene, Spider-man tries to fight him while doctor strange gives him a hand. Whilst Spider-man is hitting Thanos, the sound effects of thumping is used. This is possibly used to signify Thanos's strength and size, and how heavy he is, so using the thump effect evaluates his official size, which is very large. Also, when Spider-man gets flung away by Thanos, he hits part of a ship, and because his suit is metal, the sound effect of metal clashing into something was used. Also, the tearing of Doctor Strange's cape. Thanos tears the cape too allow his hand to be free to move. They used a ripping sound effect, to show that something had been torn.
Throughout this scene, when Thanos retaliates in an aggressive way, the music changes to an intense, negative style.
Furthermore, when Iron-man shoots his rockets at Thanos, the sound effect's sound like explosions when the rockets hit impacted. The reason they done this was to make it very realistic, also using the camera movement 'panning' helps because, you can get a full view of the explosion and the environment afterwards. Also, going back to when the ship hits Thanos, it scrapes across the floor, as this is happening the sound effect of a light earthquake was used, its sounded like it was rubbing or scraping across the floor.
This film has involved both Diegetic and non-diegetic sound within specific scenes, but i would say non-diegetic was used in this scene that i chose.
The pace changes in speed throughout this scene, mainly to create tension. especially when it is fast, makes it complex and makes the audience feel intrigued because, multiple things are going on within the scenes.
