Assignment Certain Author studies
Disclaimer: I did paste images as evidence but they seem to be missing!?
Steven Speilberg
Firstly, Steven is an American Director, Writer and Screenwriter. He was born on the 18 of December 1946. He is considered one of the founding pioneers of the New Hollywood era. He is also viewed as one of the most popular directors and producers in film history. And his Net worth is 3.7 billion Dollars.
From my research, Steven Speilbergs most significant influences where Norman Rockwell to Walt Disney.
Like every author, he has complete control when making his films. Which is good because, we then know that he enjoys putting his effort into film making which can show that he is a determined author.

What Rockwell done was focused upon the American culture which I guess was inspirational to Steven Speilberg because, he highlights him as an influence for his work.
What Walt Disney did was change the internet by creating animations within films, which was very creative and different which Spielberg likes because, he likes to create different things that other authors haven't done in their films. Such as different camera angles and story-lines for specific genres.
I think Steven Spielberg is referred as an auteur because, he creates very good popular films and has his own ideas, his own imagination for creating a film in a different way to other authors. He stands out very well. For example, his different camera angles he created and uses are now used throughout lots of other films made by other authors, so he is like a role modal because, he created something new and imaginary that a lot of people like. However, it is noticed from my research that he likes to have an actor called Tom Hanks on some of his films. Maybe because, he is a good actor for a specific character that he always needs or he just likes this actor on his films. Also, he isn't just one of the characters that are seen here and there within a film. He is the main character on the films that he has done with Steven Spielberg. For example, Saving Private Ryan. However, the reason i think he is a auteur is because, he can create films that are very good and successful. And they aren't all the same genres, they are all different. he creates a range of films which are good because, it shows that he is capable of doing multiple films. So he can commit multiple ways of producing a film which highlights that he is a very reliable author for creating films because, he can create multiple aspects of film production. He also said in an interview “I’ve always envied filmmakers like Scorsese, who make quintessential Scorsese pictures. I’ve never felt that of myself, I never felt I had a style.” 'I never felt i had a style' Which shows that he likes to create more than one genre, he has a larger perspective than other authors because, he enjoys changing his style of genre, instead of staying with a specific genre.
Lastly, in Saving Private Ryan Steven Spielberg used a flash forward at the beginning of the film and right at the end of the film. I am assuming this is done because, its a good way of ending a storyline in a good way. To show that Private Ryan became older and still lived throughout the war.

At the start of Transformers they gave a specific storyline immediately to give the audience help on what will be happening, like a guide to the next part of the film. It seemed to be Enigma because its like a puzzle, what will happen with it? How will it be used? These sort of questions will be within the audiences mind when watching the film, which is good because they are already focused upon the storyline.
Spielberg also gives a mysterious scene at the beginning of the film to make the audience have a tense feeling when watching the film.
In Transformers there is a lot of humorous scenes in the film which are very funny. Noticing this happening a lot throughout the film suggests, that it is used to make the audience feel comfortable and intrigued. Also, humour makes people happy so doing this is a force of positive action for the audience.
Although, there is a lot of different types of music throughout this film. There is a specific one that stays within every Transformers film. Its there main theme tune. Its a very intense triumphant sound of music. its use of horns and trumpets which reinforce great volume for the scenes that are committed throughout the film. Especially when Optimus Prime fights the enemies.
Lastly, right near the end which is humorous for the audience. There are some funny scenes involved at the end which makes the audience have a laughing, happy ending.

Saving Private Ryan
Throughout the films that he has made includes lots of camera angles that he used, that are very intriguing and creative. They also help certain scenarios for story lines. For example, a zoom in close up into a characters face to create a tense reaction for what has been announced.
Also, you will see a lot moving camera shots when they are especially in battle. For example at the start of the film, the American soldiers try to get to cover across the coast to retaliate. As soldiers where running the camera man was trying to implement that the audience is there by moving in a struggling manner. Trying to suggest to the audience that this scene in the film was intense and very tiring. However, it could also be trying to suggest to the audience that the camera man was there when the war was actually happening, perhaps trying to make it seem really realistic. The movement on the camera seems very blurred when it is moving to a specific part of the mise en scene. But also, when the camera is moving it seems to have no steady control, as though the camera man is just walking and holding it without making it steady.
Furthermore, they place a lot more camera angles and shots within this film. For example, the long shot, wide shot, middle shot, upper body shot, tracking shot, zoom in and zoom out shots. The use of zoom in and zoom out shots are usually implemented when they want to focus on a specific character in a scene or to zoom on a specific place to give an identity to the place they are providing for the audience. For example a birds eye view shot that zooms in or zooms out to get a full shot of the mise en scene.
The sound effects they used in this film are specifically focused upon explosions, gun shots, shouting and much more. They create such scenery of sounds to show that this based on a war story.

Also, the music that is added seems very emotional and seems to be a group of instruments played at the same time such as the brass instruments. I think they added these specific instruments to replicate the past because instruments where used a lot more than today because, we now have the technology to make the music on a computer. I also noticed when the emotional music is being played, if a character is within a scene their facial expressions are not happy. They are the complete opposite, such as upset or depressed.
1. 2.
On the other hand, Steven Spielberg seems to create suspense for the audience because, he likes to place the characters in a room where the audience cannot hear what they are talking about, so it makes the film more intense. Doing this can create a longer storyline because, it makes it harder to understand and know immediately what is going on.
1. 2.

However, Tom Hanks is used twice in a bursted ear drum scene, the sound is very silent and piercing. Tom Hanks also looks in despair when it happens both times. This use of facial expression gives off to the audience that the noise that bursted his ear drum was very loud.
Saving Private Ryan
The props they used are based upon war so guns, ammunition, helmets and much more. They focused upon using props based on warfare to show that firstly, this is a genre of war and to also show how realistic and scary warfare actually is.
Saving Private Ryan
The lighting was very basic and specific for a certain scene since it was an older film. Technology wasn't as good as now so they used normal light poles to give a larger effect for certain parts of the film.
Using Todorov's theory. Disruption, which is one of his way's of evaluating the films. He uses this theory within this film, but it isn't mainly upon the main character, its his soldiers around him. But partially it is the main character, but it is spread out upon his men and himself.
Character development within the symbolic code is used within this film, since Private Ryan is found more information is again gathered to the audience so they can gather a better understanding about Private Ryan.
Saving Private Ryan
Within this film, there are lots of explosions and bullets flying etc. But it isn't as exaggerated as in Transformers since it is a science fiction. Its supposed to be exaggerated and unrealistic. But for Saving Private Ryan its just a Dramatic War genre which is realistic because, something very similar has actually happened in the past. For example, World War I and II.
Saving Private Ryan - Narrative
Same for this film, it is a linear storyline, because there aren't any flash backs/ flash forwards. I would say that this film contains the diegetic technique because, its like reality if you where in a war with another country. For example, hearing large explosions.
However, for this film. Its based on a true story which is good because it has its specific storyline immediately when the film starts, which helps the audience to understand what kind of genre/ film it is.

Second film
Transformers
Firstly, when lots of action is happening, the camera movements are usually involved in moving around to make the scene more intense. For example, using pan, track, roll and much more. However, the use of camera angles are used a lot when an action scene is put in place. Because, making lots of angles for a specific scene makes the film more intriguing and satisfying and perhaps intense.
Spielberg does very similar things with Transformers as to Saving Private Ryan which is good because it shows that he has a specific style with taking certain camera angles and shots.
Furthermore, the use of slow motion when things are flying around by explosions and robots fighting one another creates a satisfying memory for the audience because of how cool and creative it is. And its also to show the audience what actually happened, instead of having the fight at a normal speed you wouldn't see everything from what had happened when they fought.

And its also to show the audience what actually happened, instead of having the fight at a normal speed you wouldn't see everything from what had happened when they fought.
Also, within this scene, it showed that there where people watching the fight right in front of their eyes. Which could reinforce what it feels like when watching it from a TV screen. Also, having a child there and saying 'cool mum' could reinforce a age demographic because, it shows that children like this sort of scenery. (action and futuristic)
On the other hand, they use a lot of camera angles in a scene when there is a lot of action going on maybe to manipulate a sense of speed throughout this scenario in the film.
Lastly, which I have noticed happen quite a lot throughout the film is over the shoulder shots when people are driving into the action. It may be trying to signify that there are two audiences. The people in the film and the people watching the film on the TV. Or the director is trying to involve the audience within certain parts of the film.
Lastly, the first person view when fighting.

Transformers
The use of emotional music when something bad happens makes the audience feel sad for what has happened.
When the film involves orchestra music it seems to be an intense or emotional part of the film. For example, when Bumblebee's legs are ripped off by the explosion.
At the end of the film, one of Linkin Parks songs where used to give off an ending. But an intriguing one.

In this film they used a lot of props such as the bumble bee car and the glasses that was the main characters granddads before he died. Having these specific props create a historic storyline especially for the main characters granddad, for example when they showed a flashback of his granddad looking for something and the ice cracks and he falls down the big hole seeing Megatron, and dies by the transformer shooting at him leaving his glasses underground in a close up camera shot making the glasses a huge deal for the rest of the film.
However, they use a lot of robotic equipment and modern war equipment throughout the whole film, since it is a Sci-fi, explosion packed film.
Transformers
The use of lighting was mainly focused with explosions. But also the use of the sun reflecting against the camera gave very good shadowed images of the transformers and even the main characters that where human.
Transformers
Since this film was based on a Sci-Fi genre, which involves lots of special effects. For example, the huge explosions, the destruction of the scenery throughout the fights within the film. Special Effects seems to be one of the main focuses when making a science fictional film. Just because, lots of unrealistic things happen throughout these films. However, Steven Speilberg adds his own style of effects when making a sci-fi film. He involves a bit of entertainment sometimes before a car explodes or someone is talking and the transformers are just fighting in the background.
Transformers - Narrative
Is a Linear storyline because it gradually talks about the strength of the cube and how dangerous it is. (The transformers having to protect it throughout the film) and then it gets more intense because the bad transformers are hunting them down to use it for evil. Furthermore, this film is a non-diegetic film because, it includes exaggerated explosions and destructions. And it isn't a reality there as for Saving Private Ryan, that war did actually happen.
Within transformers, there is a specific cube that can ruin or create a better world, depending on who carries it. Throughout the film, there are specific characters that have to protect the cube from the bad transformers.
From Todorov's theory, i have noticed that this film seems to be a realisation which means. Within the film, things get worse as the film goes on. This is clear because the bad transformers try to hunt down the cube and they get extremely close every time they meet one another. However, there is some sort of action where the main characters try to prevent the bad things to happen. This is a type of theory which is called the restored-order.
The symbolic code is used within this film, since it creates tension through the storyline. As the film goes on more information is gathered for the audience about the cube and how powerful and dangerous it can be if it is given to the wrong hands.
